TOM: Makeathons for disability challenges

TOM:Tikkun Olam Makers is a global movement of communities connecting Makers and Need-Knowers (individuals with a deep understanding of a specific disability or challenge) to develop extremely affordable assistive tech solutions for everyday challenges—and to make these solutions globally accessible in the public domain.

In 30 months, TOM have held seventeen Makeathons across nine nations, and Arduino technology has been a staple of every event. People who organize and participate in TOM’s events are volunteers. They are inspired by and share a vision with Arduino that Makers have the power within their communities to create a difference around the world.

At a Makeathon in Tel Aviv in 2015, Sefi Udi, who is an Industrial Designer and is also quadriplegic, challenged TOM community to develop a system that would allow him to turn pages in a book. Makers working with him offered to “hack” a Kindle so the pages could turn with a blink of his eye, but we can all agree that reading from a kindle is not the same as reading from a book. The Accessi Book, built with Arduino technology, is a small machine that turns pages using an office rubber band wrapped around a wheel and a small holder that was 3D printed. Today, this product costs less than $50 and can be self-manufactured by any maker. It is also a winner of the Deloitte Prize for Affordability

We are inviting all Arduino Makers to support TOM and its initiative by participating in the upcoming TOM:NYC Makeathon. This will be a 72-hour event at New Lab in Brooklyn, April 21-23 bringing over 150 Makers and Need-Knowers to create solutions together. At the end of the event, each Need-Knower will go home with a solution and the designs will be shared online for users around the world to download for free and adapt for their needs.

Registration closes on March 9th, so be prompt: http://www.nyc.tomglobal.org/
