Interview

What have you made?

Ampoule (“light bulb” in English) is an electronic wearable made from laser cutted wood. It reacts to the environment : surrounding sound defines the color of Leds strip place inside the helmet.

What gave you the initial inspiration?

Last year, in 2016, we were Erasmus students at Malmö University attending the “Designing for wearables” course https://edu.mah.se/en/Course/KD337A. We mostly learned the basics of Arduino (from the components to the programmation) by making prototypes, Ampoule is our final project.
At the beginning of the project, we agreed to focus on esthetic. We also wanted to build something that will work from the  interactions between the environment and the device. The final design is inspired by the French Touch duo Daft Punk and the medievals armors.

What is the original idea behind this project?

With the helmet on, the bearer is mainly deprived of the sense of sight and hearing. By hiding his face, he also loses to some point his humanity. He becomes nameless. Since the machine reacts with the environment the bearer is just a support, his visage becomes an interface.  It’s kind of paradoxical since you can’t freely interact with your surroundings but the helmet can.

How does it work?

The helmet is made from laser cutted removable pieces. We’ve decided to use wood because it was easy to bend and to shape with our design. We’ve choose this technique cause we liked the contrast between raw materials and technology, the past and the future merged to produce a timeless device. The electronics is quite simple, an Arduino board connected to a sound sensor defines the colors of the LED strips.

How long did it take to make it real?

Since it’s was a school project, we had a  limited amount of time : 3 weeks to find a concept, build the helmet and code the program.

How did you build it?

  • Arduino Nano

  • RGB Leds stips

  • Sound sensor

  • 9 Volt Battery

  • Micro USB Phone battery

  • Laser cut wood
